Rutherford County’s 2010 population was 262,604, which ranked it as the second highest Tennessee County in its rate of growth. Its county seat is Murfreesboro, which is located about 30 minutes southwest of Nashville, Tennessee. Other major areas of Rutherford Co. are the Town of Smyrna, the City of La Vergne, and the City of Eagleville. Murfreesboro was formerly home to the Tennessee state capitol (from 1819 to 1826). Also Rutherford County was the site of a major Civil War Battle of Stones River. Today there are many major companies and universities that call Rutherford County home.
